Indiana Property Taxes and Cold-Weather Reminders

November brings a few dates and seasonal considerations worth having on the Indiana homeowner calendar.

November 10: Indiana Property Taxes

Indiana property taxes are generally paid in two installments each year. For 2026, the fall installment is due November 10.

A few things to know:

  • Property-tax payments are made to the county treasurer where the property is located.
  • Indiana property taxes are paid in arrears, meaning taxes paid this year generally relate to the prior year.
  • If your property taxes are escrowed with your mortgage, your servicer may handle the payment.

Have a question about your individual bill? Your county treasurer is the best place to start.

Know Your Water Shutoff

If you haven’t already done so this fall, locate your home’s main water shutoff valve.

If a frozen pipe leaks or bursts, being able to stop the flow of water quickly can help limit additional damage.

Also check that you have:

  • Completed any needed irrigation winterization
  • Disconnected outdoor hoses
  • Addresses exposed pipes in cold areas
  • Reduced drafts around vulnerable plumbing

Leaving Town?

Holiday travel can leave a home unattended during some of Indiana’s coldest weather.

Before leaving:

  • Don’t turn off the heat.
  • Consider having someone check the property during periods of extreme cold.
  • Know how you or someone nearby could access the main water shutoff if necessary.
  • Review any property-specific winterization needs before an extended absense.

Indiana’s Office of Utility Consumer Counselor recommends not setting the thermostat below 55°F while away to help reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

Worth Knowing

Indiana property taxes are paid in arrears.

It’s a phrase you may see on tax documents without much explanation: taxes paid during the current year generally represent taxes assessed for the previous year.

Property-tax circumstances can vary. Verify your individual bill, payment status and deadlines with the appropriate county office and consult a qualified tax professional regarding tax questions. Home-maintenance needs also vary by property; consult a qualified professional when appropriate.
